SVHS Speech and Debate is seeking volunteer judges for their home invitational at the high school on February 21-22. Volunteers would judge for one hour. Judges only need to have a high school diploma, and no other training is necessary.

To volunteer as a judge for the invitational at SVHS on February 21-22, scan the QR code and sign up.

The Speech and Debate Team attended the Bronco Bash in Blackfoot Idaho January 24-25. It was a very cold weekend, but the competition was amazing and insightful.

Advancing to Finals and placing overall were:

Aisley Ivie and Fennec Burton, both seniors in Duo Interpretation with their original cutting of “The Fox and the Hound.”

In humorous interpretation, Chloe Goodson, a sophomore with “Crushed,”

and Marie Bateman, a junior with “Al-literation, Private Eye.” Bateman ended up taking 1st place overall – a really strong finish and great accomplishment.

A highlight was seeing former SVHS competitors who came to help the team’s judging obligation be filled.  Teams are required to fill judging roles in Idaho/Utah tournaments based on number of entries.  Isaac Hyde, Toby Fletcher, Caleb Thygerson, and Ashley Helm came through for us.  We are so grateful.

This ended our three-weekend run.  We had a break last weekend, but head to Jackson February 7-8.   For any community members who wish to see SVHS students perform, this is an ideal tournament to come watch.

Not only will the high school be competing at Jackson Hole High School, but Star Valley Middle School will attend its first ever speech and debate competition Feb 8 in conjunction with the high school.  They will also compete a second and final time at our home meet. It has been fun seeing our middle school pioneers for the speech and debate middle school program.

When we hold our home tournament, the high school students help run the tournament and do not compete.  That said, to help our students run the home meet, we really rely on our community for judging. All it takes is an hour of your time, an electronic device (ideally a laptop or tablet), and to be graduated from high school.

Our community is amazing at helping our tournament run smoothly and we are always grateful for the support of businesses like Simplot, Silverstar, Outlaw Ts, Surveyor Scherbel, and, of course our top notch Lincoln County School District No. 2, including -Administration at SVHS, SVMS, all of the Transportation Services, Custodial Heroes, and our parents. We look forward to your support Feb 21-22 to pull off another tournament.
