Angi Bruce, the Wyoming Game and Fish Director, discussed on air the ongoing efforts regarding grizzly bear management and the push for delisting the species from federal protection. With a new federal administration in place, Bruce expressed optimism about Wyoming assuming management of grizzly populations, stating, “We’re going to continue to look at every single way… We may have an opportunity to step back and look at the decision made in January.”

Although recent petitions to delist the grizzly have been rejected, Bruce pointed out that Wyoming’s federal delegation, including Representatives Hageman and Senator Loomis, has introduced delisting bills and is eager to push the initiative forward. She highlighted the collaborative efforts among Western states, asserting, “We have recovered them, we have been managing them, and we have the best science on the bear to delist them. It’s time.”

Bruce criticized the Endangered Species Act for not facilitating effective management, indicating that alternative methods are being explored to achieve permanent delisting and return oversight to state authorities. “We spend a lot of time and effort working with landowners and constituents to deal with conflict situations,” she explained, highlighting the importance of public safety in coexistence strategies.

A proactive approach to managing grizzly populations is at the forefront of Bruce’s agenda, including the potential introduction of a regulated hunting season. “I believe when we have management, we have the extra tools needed to actually manage the species,” she noted, asserting that state control will simplify management and reduce conflicts between people and bears.

As discussions continue, Bruce remains committed to fostering a balanced relationship between Wyoming’s residents and its wildlife.
