
• Mackey Asher named 2024 Firefighter of the Year, Jay Hokanson retires after 31 years
The Thayne Fire Department recently gathered to celebrate and honor the dedication, sacrifice, and service of its firefighters. This annual event recognized the exceptional contributions of several individuals whose commitment to the department and the community has left a lasting impact.
Firefighter of the Year: Mackey Asher has been named Firefighter of the Year. The Thayne Fire Department publicly announced, “Firefighting is more than a job; it’s a calling. Mackey has answered that call time and again, leaving the comfort of his home and the embrace of his young family to stand on the front lines, protecting the people of the community.”
Mackey shared the main highlights of his job being, “Helping people out and the adrenaline rush of going into the fire or a dangerous situation.”
The job is not easy. “The hardest part of it is seeing people on their worst days,” shares Mackey. This includes his experience of helping “people in the community going through a hard time, whether it’s a car wreck or house fire.” He shares that he is most supported by his family and the other firefighters.
The department commended Asher with the statement, “Whether it’s battling flames, responding to emergencies, or simply lending a helping hand, he embodies the true spirit of a firefighter—selfless, brave, and committed.”
Mackey’s wife, Melissa shared her praise of Mackey’s dedication to the job, including all the meetings and trainings, as well as the middle-of -the-night calls. Knowledge gained over the last five years. “I’ve never seen him complain.”

A Farewell to a Legend: Jay Hokanson Retires After 31 Years from the Thayne Fire Department. Hokanson served as firefighter as well as Chief and many other positions. The department highlights, “His steady presence on the fireground and his calm, reassuring voice in the toughest moments have made an impact on all of us who had the privilege of working alongside him… Though your official service may be ending, your influence will never fade. Whenever we step into the station, respond to a call, or guide the next generation, a part of your legacy will always be with us.”
Several other firefighters were applauded for their years of commitment to the department:

Lance Skinner – 40 Years of Service: A second-generation firefighter, Lance has spent four decades protecting the community. With unmatched expertise in fire behavior and interior firefighting, his greatest impact has been as a mentor, guiding and inspiring those around him. The Fire Department praises Skinner and his family saying, “The Skinner family has given over a century of service to the Thayne Fire Department, a testament to their unwavering commitment to duty, sacrifice, and community.”

Marc Clark – 20 Years of Service: A former Chief, Marc Clark has been a driving force within the department. His dedication and leadership continue to inspire.

Curtis Mizner – 20 Years of Service: Known for his professionalism and skill, Curt has been a steadfast presence, bringing confidence and calm to emergency responses.


Nick Hemmert – 10 Years of Service
Cole Julson – 5 Years of Service
Both Nick and Cole have shown incredible commitment and resilience, embodying the spirit of selflessness that defines the firefighting community.

A Legacy of Leadership: Toby Merritt’s Unwavering Dedication: Toby Merritt has set an extraordinary example, winning the department’s attendance award for the eighth consecutive year. With a response rate of 80% to calls and a reputation for sound decision-making, Toby’s leadership continues to strengthen the department. A former Chief, his wisdom and dedication serve as an inspiration to all.
