
The University of Wyoming team had a decent-sized contingent at the 2025 U.S. Open over the weekend. Six Cowboys and one incomer competed in a tournament held at The Expo at World Market Center from Thursday-Sunday.
Incoming freshman Lane Foard (86 kg) went 2-1 in the U20 freestyle competition to place fifth. He defeated SIU-Edwardsville’s Amare Overton via technical fall, 11-0, and Minnesota’s Silas Dailey by decision, 7-1. Foard’s loss occurred to Minnesota’s Max McEnelly via technical fall, 11-0.
Westen Hoffschneider (79 kg) had a 2-1 record, as well. He captured wins over Bellarmine’s Cael Miller by technical fall, 10-0, and Colorado Mesa’s Gavin Ramos by decision, 9-5. Hoffschneider lost to Oregon State’s Travis Grace by technical fall, 11-0.
John Alden (65 kg) went 1-1. He downed Eastern Oregon’s Matix Cooklin by technical fall, 10-0, and lost to Long Island’s Amir Avazov via decision, 13-12.
Antonio Avila (70 kg) also went 1-1. He toppled Chattanooga’s Pierce Pennington by technical fall, 10-0, and was defeated by Ohio State’s Maddox Shaw by decision, 6-0.
Brett McIntosh (72 kg), who was competing in the Greco-Roman competition, lost his only match. Army’s Justus Scott beat McIntosh by technical fall, 8-0.
Tucker Bowen (57 kg) lost his only bout of the weekend. Arizona State’s Damian Moreno downed Bowen via technical fall, 13-2.
Christian Herrera (65 kg) also fell in his lone match of the week. Cal Baptist’s Braden Priest beat Herrera via technical fall, 15-4.
U23 Nationals in Geneva, Ohio, stands as the next tournament in which Pokes will be competing. That takes place at the end of May.
