Burton named Milward Simpson Award finalist

Finalists for the Milward Simpson award have been released. This honor is given to the most outstanding female and male student-athletes in the state. This is the 50th year of the award. 

On the girls side the finalists are:

McKinley Covolo from Mountain View

Izzy Kelly of Cheyenne Central

Lauren Olsen of Douglas

Karson Tempel from Cheyenne Central

Laynee Walker of Kemmerer

The boys finalists are:

Jase Burton from Star Valley

Kelten Crow from Sheridan

Chance Morris from Sheridan

Raynor Ranum from Campbell County

Tommy Wonka from Buffalo

Burton, who has signed to run distance for Brigham Young University, helped lead the Braves to their third straight Wyoming 4A Cross-Country championship while winning the individual title. He set a new overall state record in the 3200 meter run and was part of a 4×800 meter relay team last month that also set a new overall state record. He won the 1600 meter and 3200 meter state championships in both the indoor and outdoor seasons.

Former Star Valley finalists for the award include Corey Fullmer (1988), Jason Sanderson (1994), Matt Linford (1997), Andrew McKen (2006), What Peck (2018), Asefa Wetzel (2019) and Peter Visser (2021). Visser is the only SVHS student-athlete to be presented the award. 

There has only been one finalist from Star Valley which was Lexi Erickson (2013).

The awards will be presented on June 21, in Cody
