A Star Valley summer tradition: The Old Rock Church Play

What play will be used at the Old Rock Church in Auburn this summer?

It just depends on who comes to the auditions this Saturday.

Director Kristin Bringhurst has different productions in mind, but she wants to hear the potential cast members read scripts and sing this Saturday.

“I have plays in mind and it depends on who comes to the play,” she said of the Saturday auditions during an interview on the SVI Media Weekday Wake Up Program. “I can’t make the final decision until after the auditions.”

Then with a laugh, she added, “So that means people will have come and watch the play and see [what play we selected.]”

Auditions will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Old Rock Church in Auburn. Bringhurst will provide scripts and because the plays are musicals, participants are asked to bring song to perform. They can use a soundtrack from cell phone or use sheet music. A pianist will be available.

“We are looking for actors of all ages,” said Director Kristin Bringhurst said in an earlier interview with SVI. “These are open auditions so people can just show up whenever they want between the hours of 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.”

Participants are encourage to dress warm for the April 27 auditions.

“If people can’t make it to auditions on Saturday, April 27 they are welcome to call and set up a different time to audition.”

Bringhurst said the plays create wonder memories. “They are just so much fun,” she emphasized.  “A lot of the times we have families, Dad is in the play, Mom is in the play and the kids are in the play. It’s just a fun summer activity.”

The projections are based on Star Valley’s early years. “They are written about our history and we thrown in some fictional characters to spice it up and make it funny,” she said. “It’s for all ages, we ask people of all ages to audition. Men, women, teenagers, little kids.”

The performance dates will be limited to late June and the month of July to encourage more participation. There will be no August performances as in the past.

Performances are every Friday and Saturday for five weeks, beginning on June 28 and ending on July 28.”

“Our first show will June 28, this year. This is different and we have shortened our schedule and will not include first week of August.” Bringhurst explained. “Now we will run June 28 to July 28.”

“Everyone has a double, every Friday and Saturday,” she said. The Commitment for every actor is five of those shows. We hope this will allow more people to get involved.”
