BYU-Idaho tops safety rankings from Alarms.org

According to a recent study released by alarms.org, many of the nation’s safest college campuses are in the region and none are safer than Brigham Young University-Idaho.

According to information from the website “located in Rexburg, Idaho. Once known as Ricks College, the private university is run by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which mandates students to adhere strictly to a code of behavior in line with the teachings of the church. Students must follow dress and grooming codes, refrain from consuming drugs or alcohol, and abstain from premarital sex. Still, all the rules seem to achieve the desired effect, as BYU-Idaho has some of the lowest crime rates of any institution in the country, which is even more impressive considering that enrollment tops 40,000. Rexburg, the small city it is located in, also benefits from a crime levels far below the national average.”

BYU-I has many students from the Star Valley area and since converting to a four-year institution just over a decade ago, the enrollment for the school is now listed at 43,278.

Other area favorites for Star Valley students also ranked very well on the study.

Utah State University (enrollment 28,622) was ranked 14th in the study and the University of Idaho (enrollment 13,783) was right behind in the 15th position.

The University of Wyoming (enrollment 12,648) was 20th in the study. According to information provided by UW “in the last statewide survey on UW’s performance conducted by the Wyoming Survey and Analysis Center in 2016, the university received the highest marks for its efforts to maintain a safe campus for students, employees and visitors, with 23 percent rating the performance as excellent and 50 percent rating it as good (73 percent combined).

alarms.org calculates each school’s safety score by analyzing crimes reported by universities, including rapes, robberies, assaults, burglaries, motor vehicle theft and arsons. Also factoring into the safety score were violent and property crime rates for the cities in which the schools were located, and the number of law enforcement officers employed by the institutions per 1,000 students.

Other schools of note in the study include:
Boise State University (enrollment 29,428) 43rd
Utah Valley University (enrollment 33,211) 45th
Brigham Young University (enrollment 33,469) 50th
Idaho State University (enrollment 16,851) 66th
Colorado State University (enrollment 30,614) 69th
Montana State University (enrollment 15,236) 116th
University of Utah (enrollment 31,592) 242nd
