Donkey Basketball Returns to Star Valley this April

Shooting baskets from the back of burro hasn’t happened in Star Valley since the days of the old high school.

That is about to change.

Star Valley High School is once again working on an event that would bring Donkey Basketball back to Star Valley.  Mr. Reed Pebbles from SVHS, joined Duke Dance during the Weekday Wake-up on SVI Radio (Swift 98.7 FM and Black Mountain Country 1210 AM) to talk about the what and why of the event.

Pebbles said a company from Washington is coming in to put the games on.

“They travel all over the west with their trailer full of donkeys and they do different fundraisers.  They stop at different schools.  We tried to get it going last year but we just couldn’t make a date happen where we didn’t have something else going on at the high school.  So we were able to start earlier enough this year and we found a date where everybody was here at the school so they all have an opportunity to participate.”

Donkey Basketball will be held at Star Valley High School on Tuesday, April 10, which is the Tuesday after Spring Break.

Pebbles said the event is being held as a fundraiser to help fund the local Skills USA program.

“We’re going to use the money to help send those kids to those competitions.  In the past, we’ve had kids place number one in the state and go to nationals and place very high at nationals as well.  We want to make sure that those kids that participate in their program have an opportunity to do that,” said Pebbles.

According to Pebbles, there will be four 10-person teams that will compete in a bracket format.  One team will be made up from members of the community, one made up of SVHS students, and the other two from faculty members.

“We’re in the process of starting to put those teams together.  Hopefully we can get a lot of people to come out and support the program,” said Pebbles.  “If we can get enough interest in it we can keep working towards future events with Donkey Basketball as well.”

There will be different ticket locations around the Star Valley community where tickets can be purchased in advance.
