State Soccer Day 1 Recap

Star Valley’s crowd had to suffer through a lot of scoreless minutes as the Wyoming State Soccer Championships commenced in Jackson on Thursday morning. The Lady Braves faced off against the Worland Warriors in a 9 a.m. match. The action was scoreless until the 37th minute when Casey Wassum broke through the Star Valley defense to beat Josie Currie one on one. It was 1-o at intermission.

It was one of the few that got past Currie who put together perhaps her best game of the season with 10 total saves include several with the shooter in her face.

The dagger came in the 49th minute as Worland freshman, Tymberlynn Crippen put the score at 2-0. The Lady Braves struggled to string together quality shots on the Worland keeper and were outshot in the match, 16-10.

The 2-0 loss sends the Lady Braves into the consolation bracket once again where they will face off against the Douglas Lady Bearcats in a 9 a.m. match on Field #2 which is located near Jackson Hole High School.

The scoreless wall continued in the boys quarterfinals as the Braves took on the Cody Broncs. This came as a surprise after Star Valley hung nine goals on the Broncs just two weeks ago but it was CHS who struck first as they snuck one past keeper Alek Lawson. Cooper Brown was credited with the goal in the 8th minute. Lawson finished with three saves including a late skyscraper with the match still very much in doubt.

From there it was a shooting gallery for the Braves but with all shots going wide. Star Valley outshot Cody by an incredible 32-4 margin but trailed until the match’s final minutes. Then finally in the 76th minute, Noah Hutchinson tied the match and apparently kicked the lid off the goal in the process. Gerson Lozano scored on a direct kick just seconds later as the Braves took the 2-1 lead. Lozano added a capper in the game’s final seconds as he caromed another goal of the left upright and a 3-1 Star Valley final.

The Braves will face off against the Lander Tigers on Friday as they now advance to the 3A semifinals for the first time since 2013. The match will be on Field #4 at 11 a.m. at the Jackson football stadium.
