Weekend Sports Wrap: Feb 16-17

The wrestling team ran away with the 3A West Regional title, several SVHS athletes competed in the finals of the Simplot Games and the basketball teams completed their season series with the squads from the Bridger Valley over the weekend.

Regional Wrestling
The Braves scored 269.5 team points, put 13 grapplers into the finals and collected seven champions as they got one step closer to their third straight Wyoming 3A state team title.
The Powell Panthers were a distant second at the regional tournament with 188.0 points and Cody rounded out the top three with 148.0 points.

Star Valley had both finalists at 106, 113 and 120 pounds. Haze Child won the 106 class over teammate Brayden Andrews. Spencer Angell won the 113 pound weight class over Logan Hoopes and Tristian Hicks won the 120 pound class over Trey Waldron.

Gavin Patterson (126), Trevor Clark (145), Matt Hunting (182) and Josh Dawson (220) all won their weight classes as well. Dawson is 29-0 on the season and is now one weekend away from completing back-to-back undefeated seasons.

Kodi Burk (152), Koa DeLong (160) and Hunter Cranney (Hwt) all placed second.

Star Valley will be looking for their third consecutive state championship for the first time in 20 years this next weekend in Casper. CLICK HERE FOR STATE BRACKET PAIRINGS.

Indoor Track
The Simplot Games took place in Pocatello, Idaho over the weekend and several Star Valley competitors were part of the 40th year of the event. Several of the highlights included Asefa Wetzel and Emmy Heywood advancing to the finals in the 1600 meter and Bubba Brown, Courtney Campbell, Brandon Tully and Wyatt Peck setting a new school record in the Medley and placing third in the finals.

Basketball
The Lady Braves went up against #2 Lyman on Friday night, losing a heartbreaker 50-47 as a late three-point basket was waived off as the sideline called a timeout. A subsequent three-pointer was off the mark. The girls then went to Mountain View to face the #3 Buffalos and struggled to score in a 49-40 loss which dropped them to (8-10) overall and (2-3) in the Southwest District. The Lady Braves will play in Jackson on Tuesday evening and wrap up the regular season in Pinedale on Thursday.

The Braves started all five of their seniors on Friday as they had little trouble with the Lyman Eagles in a 49-35 victory. The team then picked up another win in Mountain View on Saturday with a 52-47 win to move to 5-0 in the Southwest and seal the top seed for the regional tournament. The Braves (8-10)(5-0) will be looking to stop a three-game skid against the Jackson Broncs on Tuesday and then wrap up a perfect district record in Pinedale on Thursday.
