Weekend Sports Wrap: Football and Volleyball playoffs

The Star Valley Braves Football team blasted the Lander Tigers 50-21 to advance to the 3A Football semifinals on Friday.

Tied at 14-14, the Brave engineered a drive that ended with a touchdown to take a 21-14 advantage. The Tigers very nearly answered with less than a minute to go before the half but a potential reception inside the five-yard line was broken up by Kort Hilton with a crunching hit.

Coming out of the locker room, Winston Green returned the third quarter kickoff for a touchdown and a two-point conversion to push the advantage to 29-14. From there, the rout was on behind a dominant rushing game led by Lane Oesch and the offensive line. Oesch broke the school record for yards in a game as he gashed the Tigers for 301 yards and two scores. Green caught a pair of touchdown passes in addition to his special teams touchdown.

The win puts the Braves into a rematch with the Cody Broncs who defeated Worland 40-7 in their quarterfinal match up. Kickoff for the game is scheduled for 7 pm on Friday, November 5.

On the other half of the bracket, the Jackson Broncs rolled past the Buffalo Bison, 75-27 and will now travel to Douglas. The Bearcats held on to defeat the Powell Panthers 14-10.

The 4A West Regional Volleyball Tournament took place at Star Valley High School. The Lady Braves swept both the Green River Wolves and the Evanston Red Devils to qualify for the 4A State Tournament this week. The wins advanced the girls to the regional championship where they faced off against the Natrona Fillies. The visitors swept Star Valley to claim the Regional Championship.

As the #2 seed out of the West the Lady Braves are now scheduled to play the #3 seed out of the East in the Thunder Basin Bolts. The match is scheduled to start at 4:30 pm on Thursday, November 4, at the Ford Wyoming Center in Casper.
