Whetten among Big Sky leaders as conference championships start this weekend.

It’s Championship time for the Weber State track and field teams. The Wildcat men’s and women’s teams will compete this week at the Big Sky Championships, held Thursday-Saturday in Flagstaff, Arizona.

The conference meet gets underway Thursday with the heptathlon and pentathlon. The remaining events will be held Friday and Saturday. There will be finals in 10 events on Friday with the other events in trials. There will be finals in 22 events on Saturday.

The meet will be held at the J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff, hosted by Northern Arizona University. The meet will be streamed live on Pluto TV channel 230 as well as WatchBigSky.com.

Hailey (Ricks) Whetten rewrote the SVHS record book for distance running and helped the Lady Braves to their first ever cross-country and track & field championships in high school. She has had a standout career at Weber State. She holds school records for the 1600 meter, 3200 meter and was part of the record time in the 4×800 meter relay.

The Wildcat women’s team will send 26 athletes to the meet. WSU currently has five rankings in the top three in events in the Big Sky. Starlee Woodbury is second in the conference in the 60 meter hurdles with Cidnee Davies right behind, currently in third place. Hailey Whetten has the third best time in the conference in the 5,000 meters.

Whetten was a two-time Gatorade Runner of the Year for the State of Wyoming and helped lead Star Valley High School to a Wyoming 3A cross-country championship in 2012 and a Wyoming 4A track & field championship in 2010.

Paige Cooper is second in the high jump with Eden Richards currently third in the event.

On the men’s side, the Wildcats also have 26 athletes entered in the meet. Weber State enters the conference meet with four spots in the top three in events. Trey Deveraux is third in the conference in the pole vault and Nathan Dunivan is third in the weight throw. Reece Lafaye is currently second in the heptathlon with Caleb Whitney right behind in third place.
