Wyoming ranked #1 in total energy costs

With July most often the hottest month of the year, energy consumption is at its highest for the United States this month and as a result, the costs of keeping those temperatures down can cost a bit more.

According to wallethub.com, energy costs in the U.S. can eat between 5 and 22 percent of a family’s after-tax income. And while Wyoming is not always on the lips of those talking about the heat index, the Cowboy State is ranked #1 in total energy costs by state in the most recent findings.

wallethub.com used monthly electricity costs, natural gas cost, motor fuel cost and home heating oil cost. Wyoming did well in terms of electricity costs (#38) but came in at #12 in natural gas cost and led the nation in motor-fuel cost at $221 per month. Mississippi was second with $178 per month. Wyoming was found to have the highest motor-fuel consumption per driver.

Other data uncovered by the study shows Hawaii has the highest electricity prices as well as natural gas prices.

Illinois ranked #1 in natural gas consumption per consumer. Utah was #4 in this category.
