Over 100 children, ages 3 to 14, took part in the annual Kemmerer youth fishing derby at the Kemmerer Community Pond on Saturday, June 12, under near perfect weather conditions.

Like most summer events, the 2020 fishing derby was cancelled due to the pandemic.

The pond was recently stocked with trout, so a lot of fish were caught. The fishing derby was conducted by the Kemmerer Parks and Recreation Department. They served lunch, weighed the fish and even had poles for any participant who needed one. Local Wyoming Game and Fish Department personnel were on hand to answer questions and, along with Kemmerer mayor Bill
Thek, who helped clean and gut the caught fish.

About every 15 minutes, a name of one of the participants was picked to receive a prize. The kids who caught the biggest and smallest fish in four age categories were awarded a trophy at the end of the event, which ran from 8:00 a.m. to noon.

For the five and under age category, Wiley Hanson caught the biggest fish, and Anabelle Custer brought in the smallest fish. In the six to eight category, Casen Hysell landed the biggest fish and Richley Stewart caught the smallest fish. For the nine to 11 year old category, Hudson Hartman hauled in the biggest fish, and Carlos Schneider caught the smallest. Abel Jiminez landed the biggest fish in the 12 to 14 age category, and his brother Kane Jimenez brought in the smallest fish. The biggest overall fish caught was by three year old Wiley Hansen at .91 pounds.
