An avalanche warning has been issued for the Greys River, Tetons and Togwotee Pass areas by the Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center. The warning went into effect Wednesday, January 17 at 5:30 p.m. and will expire at 10:00 p.m. on Friday, January 19.

According to the warning, “Large, destructive and life-threatening avalanches are very likely today.  Avalanches can happen naturally or can be triggered from a distance while approaching or riding a slope, from adjacent terrain, or below.  Stay off of and out from under backcountry slopes steeper than 30° at all elevations.”

The avalanche forecasts show high avalanche danger for the Greys River area at all elevations. High avalanche danger is expected to continue into Friday.

Numerous avalanches have been reported this week, including an avalanche near Star Valley Ranch that claimed the life of a backcountry skier from Alpine.
