The Star Valley FFA is conducting a fabric drive to collect fleece and other fabrics. Members of the chapter will use the fabrics to make blankets, pillows and other tools that can lend support and comfort to folks in need as the cold temperatures of Star Valley’s climate settle in. Fabric donations will be accepted through November 25.

Lauren Parsons, Star Valley FFA Reporter, shared the chapter’s plans for the fabric. During the annual SVHS Braves in Action Day, which is the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, the SV FFA will build the blankets and other items, and donate them to the Afton Food Pantry.

Community members are invited to leave their fabric donations at the drop box in the Star Valley High School Counseling Office or with an officer or member of the FFA in your neighborhood. All donations should be at least 48 inches by 48 inches in size or larger.

Any type of fabric “will do,” said Parsons. “We are just looking for as much as we can get.”  The chapter has already received seven pieces, and is hoping that the community will search their personal fabric collections or be willing to purchase fabric to support the project.

“The FFA has been doing quite a bit with the food pantry,” said Parsons.  Last year, the chapter built a chicken coop where they now keep a brood of laying hens. “We have been donating all our eggs that we have been getting from our chapter chickens at school. We have had a lot of good stuff going on with [the food pantry].”

Bridget Frank, who serves as Assistant Advisor to the SV FFA, explained that members who attended the Wyoming FFA Summer Leadership Camp in June were “encouraged to find ways they could help their local communities.” Since the camp, officers and members have put their heads together, actively searching for service opportunities and looking to meet the needs of the people around them.

“Community service is a large part of the FFA culture,” Frank told SVI Media. Reflecting the FFA motto “Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve,” members ultimately use their skills to serve those around them. “I hope that the members are able to provide services to the community that can truly make an impact.”

“This is just a bunch of kids trying to do their best and do something important for our community that is going to help,” said Parsons. “Not a lot of kids like to do that kind of thing these days, so we are just trying the best that we can to give back to the community that has given us so much.”
