Weekend Sports Wrap: Jan. 19-20

The wrestling team continued to roll, the indoor track & field team competed in Utah and the basketball teams picked up some wins within the Southwest District over the weekend.

Despite missing a pair of varsity wrestlers due to illness, the Braves left no doubt who the favorite for the Wyoming 3A team title is in next weekend’s tournament.

Star Valley compiled 257.5 team points, a full 120 more than second-place Worland who finished with 137.5. Host Lander was third with 124.0. Powell and Kemmerer rounded out the top-five.

The Braves had an incredible 18 wrestlers place in the top-six in Lander. Brayden Andrews (106), Spencer Angell (120) and Josh Dawson (220) won their individual weight classes. Angell met up with team mate Tristian Hicks in the championships.

Other wrestlers who made the championship included Trey Waldron (113), Gavin Patterson (126), Kodi Burk (152), Koa DeLong (160) and Hunter Cranney (HWT).

The wrestling program continues to flex their depth as they also bought home the Lander Invitational junior varsity team title with 165.0 team points. Big Piney was second with 96.5 and Pinedale was third with 87.0.

Individual champs from the JV side of the tournament included Spencer Larson (120) and Tony Mickelson (152). Those making the JV championship included Jacob Isaacson (113), Carson VanDeburg (126), David Walker (182) and Gabe Nield (220).

The Braves will look to repeat as Ron Thon Tournament champions in Riverton this next weekend. Star Valley won the all-class event for the first time last season.
The wrestling team returns home for senior night on Thursday, February 1. This is a “White Out” event. Plan on attending now and wearing white.

The Indoor Track & Field team competed at the Weber Invitational in Ogden, Utah over the weekend. Some of the top finishes included Courtney Campbell with a 4th place finish in the long jump for the boys and Janice Hall finishing 7th in the long jump for the girls. The distance runners will be at the Olympic Oval in Kearns, Utah next weekend.

The Braves opened up Southwest District play with a pair of wins over the Bridger Valley as they routed Lyman 61-32 on Friday. Kambel Jenkins had 16 points and Payton Erickson scored 15 to pace the effort. The team then held on to beat Mountain View, 50-44. Andrew Jeske led the team with 13 points and Erickson added 12 in the win. Star Valley is now (4-7) overall but (2-0) in conference play. They host Pinedale next Friday.

• The Lady Braves lost a tough outing in Lyman to the #2 Eagles on Friday, 50-45 as the Eagles got 34 points from McKinley Bradshaw. Olivia Muir, Caitland Erickson and Abby Coles all reached double-figures. The Lady Braves bounced back with a 44-39 victory over #4 Mountain View on Saturday afternoon in Afton. Muir and Coles reached double figures again on Saturday. The win improves the Lady Braves’ record to (5-6) overall and (1-1) in conference play. The ladies also host Pinedale on Friday with a chance to even up their overall record.
