Wyoming Sec of State Ed Murray resigned Friday afternoon. Republican State Sen. Leland Christiansen and Democrat State Rep. James Byrd have announced their candidacies for the office.

Murray has been accused of two separate incidents since December which caused him to announce that he would not run for governor.

“I step aside with peace and serenity in order that I may fully focus on what is most important in my life: my marriage, my family and my health,” Murray said in a statement.

Deputy Secretary of State Karen Wheeler will serve until Goveronor Matt Mead appoints a new secretary.
