A 21-year old Afton man is dead following a single-vehicle accident in Grover in the early morning hours on Wednesday, July 19. According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol, Alexander Rex Verley, 21 of Afton, was driving a Dodge Dakota northbound on U.S. Highway 89 “at a high rate of speed as it entered a left-hand curve in the road.”
According to the information from the WHP, the “driver attempted to negotiate the curve by steering to his left but the vehicle’s speed was too fast.”
The Dodge entered a counter-clockwise yaw, slid off the east shoulder of the road and began to roll.
During the rollover, the driver, who was not wearing his seat belt, was ejected. The Dodge came to rest on it’s roof in a field and the driver sustained fatal injuries at the scene. The crash was reported several hours later by a passer-by at 5:47 a.m. The time of death according to the WHP was 1:30 a.m.
Alcohol is being investigated as a contributing factor in the crash.
The fatality is the the 54th on Wyoming highways so far in 2018. There were 123 fatalities in 2017.
Star Valley EMS, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and the Wyoming Highway Patrol responded to the scene.
