TEXT-IN RESPONSES: Should all babies born on U.S. soil be citizens, regardless of parent’s status?

President Trump disputes the idea that the 14th Amendment to the Constitution protects birthright citizenship.  Trump told a crowd in Fort Myers, Florida yesterday the 14th Amendment makes it clear that illegal immigrants are not granted birthright citizenship because they are not subject to the jurisdiction of the United States.  Many legal scholars disagree.  Trump is promising to end birthright citizenship, which he claims is costing the U.S. billions of dollars.

Thursday during the Weekday Wake-up on SVI Radio, Duke & Dahl asked listeners if they agree or disagree with the current law in the U.S. surrounding birthright citizenship.  Should a child born in the U.S. be an automatic citizen even if the mother is not?  Here are the listener’s responses.

“So Democrats are comfortable with birthright. And they are also comfortable with abortion. Seems like there is some philosophical inconsistency there.”

“The 14th amendment specifically stated when it was first put in any illegal alien what’s not covered under that so why are they now they should not be covered all trump wants is them to follow the original lawit was changed by the Democrats in the 60’s.”

“They should not be citizens, and the law wasn’t meant to be interpreted, or abused that way.”

“Disagree with anyone getting automatic citizenship. One or both parents should be a citizen in order for the child to be.”

“We are still a nation of laws, not public opinion. While I disagree with the executive order, in order to change the constitution we need a 3/4 of the states to change that law.”

“End birthright citizenship.”

“Unless the parents are citizens I don’t think the children should be citizens.”

“I like the idea of the mother needing to be a citizen.”

“Totally disagree it should be changed.”

“This is terribly abused. We must do away with it. Let all apply through normal citizenship.”

“I don’t like the idea of the President changing this by executive order. If the people don’t like it, it should be placed on the ballot and we should vote on it!”

“The law doesn’t need to go away, it just needs to be refined. If you’re not a citizen then neither should your new born.”
