A battle is brewing in Wyoming over who should decide if guns are allowed on the campus of the University of Wyoming. The University or the state legislature?
The issues arose after a group of Wyoming residents opened carried on the campus in Laramie during the Wyoming State Republican Party Convention in April. Currently guns are not allowed on the University’s campus, a decision put in place by the school.
During the Weekday Wake-up on SVI Radio (Swift 98.7 FM and The Spur) Thursday morning, listeners were asked if they believe guns should or should not be allowed on college campuses across Wyoming, regardless of who makes the decision. Here are their responses.
In Favor of Guns on Campus
“Conceal carry should absolutely be legal on not just college campus’s throughout the state, but all school districts as well. Law abiding citizens carry everywhere else and don’t misuse their guns. It’s high time we better educated the public about the positive use of guns.”
“I disagree with the person who bashed the attendees at the state republican convention. Yes, we are an open carry state, but what about these places who say “no, you can’t carry here.” The part I read, about the incident in Laramie, was this person was willing to do what it took to bring this issue to a court case to decide just how much of an open carry state we are. Several were carrying but just one got a citation. I applaud those who were brave enough to bring this issue to the front page.”
“Yes Wyoming is a open carry state.”
“That is a tough question- I am guessing there are more guns on campus’s now. That being said I feel that bad guys are not going to do crazy things when they know there are other with guns that will shoot back. I am for carrying guns.”
Apposed to Guns on Campus
“I am a lifelong resident of Star Valley. My family settled this area in the late 1800s. We are hunters and use guns on a regular basis. I absolutely believe in the right to bare arms. That being said, I was appalled and embarrassed by the behavior of some attendees of the republican meetings last spring. Their actions not only were ludicrous, they furthered the movement to ban guns by being irresponsible and irrational with their guns. I just shake my head at the whole thing. I am a lifelong republican who is increasingly looking for a more rational political group. Actions such as these taking place in Laramie are a poor reflection on the party.”
“Marijuana use on our campuses is at an all time high. Let’s go ahead and add firearms to the mix. What could possibly go wrong?”
