A radio station in Cleveland, Ohio has banned a popular Christmas song amid concerns about its predatory nature. Star 101, WDOK-FM, calls itself “Cleveland’s Christmas station.” But the popular song “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” will not be among the Christmas classic’s played on the station this year.
The song is perceived by some as unworthy for the most wonderful time of the year, particularly in the age of the #MeToo movement. The duet is about a man trying to dissuade a woman from leaving a party despite her repeated protestations.
During the Weekday Wake-up on the SVI Radio Network Tuesday morning, Duke & Dahl asked listeners if the agreed with the radio station’s decision to remove the song, or if it was another unneeded move in the name of political correctness. Below are their responses.
In Favor of Pulling the Song
“I can see why they would have taken it off the air. One of the most popular versions of the song sounds like a 60 year old man trying to convince a young girl to stay, I’ve always thought it was a little creepy.”
Apposed to Pulling the Song
“This song is fine! They even sing it on Elf!”
“There goes “Grandma got run over by a Reindeer” “Disagree” I’m over political correctness!!!!”
“Here’s my response. “The World Needs More Cowboys.” What’s next the Snow-Man!”
“I love the song. There are way more songs played on the radio that are even more inappropriate than “Baby it’s cold outside”.”
“Santa Baby” is worse. Think about it, a young, greedy, selfish woman flirting with Santa Clause to get her high dollar Christmas list fulfilled. That song makes me sick.”
“If you find it offensive turn the volume down.”
“Disagree-Too much PC!”
“Oh my heck the song has been around since the 50’s. Now we have a problem with the song?? Get real. Leave things alone that don’t matter. Worry about more important things like the way YOU treat people”
“Song is excellent leave it alone.”
“Are you kidding me?!!! That’s one of my favorite songs.”
“The people who are trying to get rid of this old Christmas staple song are the same people who are saying Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer is abusive. How ridiculous. It’s just fine!”
“I didn’t really need another reason to not live in Cleveland but now I have one, thanks. The evil isn’t in the song but in the mind of the listener. The song is fine.”
“I think that if they ban that song there are other song that are more incorrect or politically incorrect that get played throughout the year that should be banned also. Like most of the rap songs.”
