Wednesday’s snow storm produced heavy snowfall, especially in the northern end of Star Valley, along with strong winds in southern Lincoln County and throughout Wyoming.
Snow fell over western Wyoming Tuesday night through Wednesday afternoon. Less snow feel across southern and central Wyoming, but those areas saw stronger winds.
The National Weather Service Riverton, Wyoming office reports that as of 5:00 PM Wednesday Alpine had received the most snow accumulation in the state with 9 total inches, the same amount accumulated at Grand Targhee and 4 inches more than what fell on Togwotee Pass.
Other Star Valley locations include Star Valley Ranch with 6.5 inches and 5.5 inches in Thayne. Official reports were that 1 inch fell in Afton, although most residents reported closer to 4 or 5 inches of accumulation.
In south Lincoln County 2 inches accumulated in Diamondville and 1 inch at Fossile Butte.
It was the winds, however, in southwest Wyoming that caused the majority of travel issues. The weather Service reported a 42 mile-per-hour wind gust 13 miles west of Kemmerer. Mount Coffin in Lincoln County recorded a 50 mph gust.
Other areas around Wyoming also reported strong winds. A 73 mph gust was recorded at Muddy Gap in Fremont County. 71 mph gusts were reported near Casper. The Rock Springs Airport measured a 49 mph gust.
