Kemmerer High School Football may have had what looks like a lopsided loss to Lyman Friday night 38-7, but Coach Bart Jernigan says there were some positive things taken away as well.

He says the effort was there just some of the execution lacked a little bit.

“I think there were moments of focus where we lapsed in terms of executing our scheme and our plays,” Jernigan said. “I think that reflected itself in the outcome obviously.”

Kemmerer Rangers play-by-play announcer for the Spur, Rob Miles, says the team seemed to struggle in the trenches on both sides of the ball.

“It was hard to gain any momentum,” Miles said. “When Lyman was so commanding at the line of scrimmage.”

Jernigan seems to agree with that assessment as he says there are opportunities to grow up front on the offensive line and defensive line.

“We kind of got moved around and we got handled a little bit up front,” Jernigan said. “Now I think the potential is there, I would give that honest assessment.”

He says he believes the team can get things right in that aspect of the game. He says the team will need to learn to make some plays up the middle to find success throughout the season.

“It’s going to be key,” Jernigan said. “If you watch the way our line goes, if we grow the rest of the year, we’ll have a successful season. If we fail to do so, it could be a long one.”

He says there were also some moments of things he was happy to see. He also says football is always a hard story to tell because some big plays could change how the game might be perceived. However, he was happy with the run game.

“I was happy with the way Aq Martinez ran the ball,” Jernigan said. “Colter Julian had a couple of big runs as well.”

He did mention that they have some young players on his roster, but they have to find a way to take a step forward.

“We’ve got to play varsity football,” Jernigan said. “I think we’ll do it, I think we’ll be able to, but that’s something we’ve got to put the focus on.”

He says they will have to help these young players grow up quickly and that will be on the coaching staff to do so. He says they will put some good work in this next week as they get ready to host Pinedale this next Friday at 7 P.M.
