There may come a point in your life when you will have to get surgery. A surgery will have you stuck in bed for a least a few days so that you can recover. To ensure you don’t accidentally do something that could prolong your recovery, here’s what not to do after surgery.
Drink Alcohol/Smoke
After surgery, there’s a good chance you will take medicine to help you recover and help you deal with the pain. One of the worst things you can do while taking this medication is to drink alcohol or smoke. Both will hurt the healing process, and most medications will tell you not to consume alcohol or smoke while you take the medication.
Not Getting Enough Rest
Surgery is a tough thing for your body to go through, and it needs an adequate amount of rest to heal. Follow the instructions from your doctor, and relax for a few days or weeks after the surgery. Make sure you also stay as comfortable as possible; wear recovery compression clothes and stay in a bed. The recovery process is key, and you don’t want to rush it; otherwise, you could make matters worse.
Drive A Vehicle
For the next few days or weeks after your surgery, you will typically not have full control over yourself because of all the antibiotics and pain medication you have to take. This means you’re not in the right condition to drive. Make sure you don’t drive yourself to any follow up appointments, or any places for that matter, until you no longer need to take medications.
Not Eat or Drink
After going through a surgery, you may not be in the mood to eat or drink after what your body just went through. However, not eating or drinking is another case of what not to do after surgery. Your body still needs fuel, which is why you must eat. You may have limited choices for what you can eat after your surgery, but it’s still important to do so.
Work Out
While working out is excellent for your health, you will have to go on a break after going through a surgery. This goes back to giving your body enough rest before you return back to your regular lifestyle. Lifting heavy weights can result in serious pain and damage to your body. You will not lose any muscle if you stay out of the gym for a few days or weeks.
