With the regular season tucked away, the final two weekends of the wrestling season are here.
The 3A West Regional Tournament will take place this Friday and Saturday at Mountain View High School where the heavily favored Braves will see challengers from Pinedale, Lyman, Lander, Jackson, Cody, Riverton, Mountain View and Powell.
Head coach Eddie Clark feels the team is as able as they’ve been since early December.
“We’re finally healthy what do you know,” he said. “I honestly was trying to figure it out. I think we had everyone at the Braves Brawl and that’s it until now.”
Clark detailed significant injuries for much of the starting lineup. Parker Merritt (285), Trent Clark (195), Spencer Larson (126), Carson VanDeburg (170) and Jacob Guid (113) have all missed action this season. That doesn’t count the annual bout with the flu that tore through the SVHS Wrestling room as well.
Clark seems fine with the journey that the 2019-20 season has given them.
“As long as we’re together at the beginning and the end we should be fine,” he said. “That is if we don’t break anyone between now and Friday.”
Clark feels there should be some very entertaining rematches of the season in Mountain View, especially at 182, 138, 113, 106, 145 and 160.
Star Valley is taking 26 wrestlers to Mountain View High Schooo, taking two at each weight with the exception of 195 and 220. The staff feels all 26 have a chance to make it to Casper.
“That’s the plan,” Clark added. “We’re not going not to qualify. We’re taking them so there’s a chance. Our guys have worked hard and done what they need to do so they’ll be competitive with anybody.”
The weekend serves as an appetizer to the main course which is next weekend in Casper as Star Valley goes for their fifth straight team title.
Session 1 will begin at 2 p.m. on Friday afternoon with the Championship Quarterfinals which will be followed by the first and second rounds of wrestlebacks.
Saturday’s action will start at 9 a.m. with the Championship Semifinals and the third round of wrestlebacks. The Consolation Semifinals are scheduled to begin at 11:30 p.m..
Session 3 will consist of the Consolation Finals and the Championship Finals. These matches will have audio coverage from SVI Media.
