Governor Mark Gordon has recommended that Wyoming close their schools for the next three weeks in light of the COVID-19 virus that is currently on the minds of many residents.
“This is Wyoming, where we are all neighbors,” Gordon said in a statement, in which he said the state was facing “unprecedented circumstances.” “While social distancing should be a priority for all of us, it should not keep us from helping out our neighbors. I am thinking of our first responders and healthcare workers on the frontlines who may be without child care. This is a time, if the risk is low, to help one another out.”
Laramie County School District No. 1 (Cheyenne) stated that they will close their doors until April 7. Currently Wyoming has three confirmed cases of the virus with several others under quarantine.
Teton County Idaho recently confirmed a case and residents in both Wyoming and Idaho have announced closures to try and limit the spread of the Coronavirus.
As for Lincoln County School District No. 2 (LCSD#2), the following statement was released on the district’s Facebook page on Sunday afternoon.
“As of right now school will continue in LCSD#2 as planned,” the statement read. “Supt. Erickson has a conference call scheduled at 8:30 a.m. on Monday morning with Governor Gordon, Jillian Balow and Dr. Alexia Harrist. Following the call the district administration team will meet to discuss recommendations based on that conference call. We encourage parents to do what they feel is best for their own family. Leniency with absences will be handled on a case by case basis. Updates will be provided on social media and school websites as they become available. If more urgent communication is needed the school district will use the emergency school notification system. A message will be sent out later this afternoon to all households containing the same information as this post.”
The Weekday Wakeup on Swift 98.7 FM and The Spur (1210 AM in Star Valley) and 105.3 FM / 940 AM in the Kemmerer / Diamondville and Bridger Valley areas will have Superintendent Erickson on Monday morning’s show which runs from 7-9 a.m.
More information is also expected later tonight on this development and will be updated here at SVInews.com.
