The familiar sound of the Afton siren went off multiple times on Saturday evening as the Afton Volunteer Fire Department (AVFD) responded to calls in the Crow Creek area outside of Fairview.

Initial reports are that the fire was human-caused and the AVFD saved multiple vacation homes with their efforts. The cause is still under investigation. SVI will provide more information as it becomes available.

Hot and dry conditions are present throughout the area with fire danger in the Bridger-Teton and Caribou-Targhee National Forests being set at “Very High” fire danger.

A smoky haze had already settled into the area due to wildfires in Montana which was being blown into Western Wyoming due to a cold weather event making its way across the region.

Temperatures in the area were over 90 degrees for Labor Day weekend although a cold front with potential snow is expected by Monday night and an overnight low of 20 degrees on Tuesday September 8.
