The Salt Creek Restoration Project will begin this week on the Kemmerer Ranger District of the Bridger-Teton National Forest and is planned to conclude in mid-November of 2020. This restoration project is located in Lincoln County, Wyoming on Salt Creek and its associated riparian area south from the Allred Flats Campground and to the Salt Creek crossing on FS Road, 10382.

The Salt Creek Restoration Project will achieve multiple objectives and has three main components, including replacement of the stream culvert, reclamation around the salt mine, and restoration of historic log structures throughout the construction reach. Project objectives include restoring ecological function to Salt Creek, its associated floodplain and riparian area, connecting Salt Creek downstream of the culvert with its tributaries, and improving in-stream fish habitat.

This work will include installation of a new aluminum box culvert to improve fish passage, rehabilitation of the Salt Creek channel around the salt mine along with implementation of best management practices to protect the salt mine operation from seasonal flooding flows from Salt Creek, and removal and replacement of historic restoration structures. During this time, there will be heavy equipment working in and around Salt Creek and FS Road 10382.

We anticipate the road will be closed up to four days to allow for the installation of the new culvert. In addition to construction at the road crossing, construction equipment will be using the road to move logs and other construction material throughout the project’s implementation period and may be impassable to user traffic for short periods of time.

For hunters and recreationists in the Salt Creek area, there are alternative parking and camping areas directly across the highway from FS Road 10382 and we ask that public users of the area be mindful of the construction activity if they choose to walk through the area to access that part of the Forest.
