Weekend Sports Wrap: February 14

Another weekend is in the books for SVHS sports. Here’s a look at how the teams fared in their latest competition.

Wrestling:
Hosting both Cokeville and Evanston for Senior Night on Friday, the Braves made short work of both squads as they defeated the Panthers 57-19 and the Red Devils 53-15. Up next for the grapplers is the 3A West Regionals which will take place at Green River High School.

Basketball:
It was the longest road trip of the season for the cagers as they made their way through the latest winter storm to Casper and Rock Springs.

In the Oil City, the girls faced off against the #3 Natrona Fillies and gave the ranked team all they could handle in a game that came down to the final minute. Natrona prevailed with a 47-41 final. Addie Butler had a double-double for Star Valley with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

In the boys game, the Braves saw an early lead evaporate in the second half in what turned out to be a scrap to the finish. In the end Star Valley picked up their first win at NCHS since 1964 as Brant Nelson stole the ball from the Mustangs on the final play.

On Saturday, the girls faced off against a Tigers team that had routed them by 22 points in Afton in January and picked up a small measure of revenge as they picked up a 42-28 victory in Sweetwater County. Butler again led the team in scoring with 13 points.

The guys found themselves in yet another close contest in a back-and-forth final quarter. Trailing by a point in the final minute, the Braves got the game-winner from Nelson once more, this time in the form of a three-point basket and a 42-40 victory. After a 0-6 start to the season, the Braves have now won nine straight games.

The basketball teams will be hosting the Jackson Broncs this next Friday and traveling Evanston for a Saturday tilt.
