◆ Class sizes remain in the high teens and low twenties.
With just over 3000 students enrolled in schools with LCSD No. 2 for the 2021-2022 school year, class sizes are remaining similar to the sizes that teachers and students worked in last year.
“Our numbers are up a little over 100 from where we ended last year,” Superintendent Matt Erickson told SVI. “We hope we have planned well with a handful of new part-time teachers. We just added another section of weights and another section of health at Star Valley High. We have done two or three things like that to address increased numbers.”
Though Cokeville enrollment numbers have not changed, the four elementary schools in Star Valley are up by 10-12 students each. SVHS expects about 40 more students than they had last year.
Star Valley Middle School numbers will remain the same. Even with an influx of new students, numbers will remain relatively even because the biggest class in the district transitioned from the middle school to the high school and took their larger number to the 9 th grade at SVHS. With that large Freshman class, SVHS is showing the greatest growth in enrollment. Swift Creek High School will maintain approximately 55 students.
“Classroom sizes across the district will remain in the high teens and low twenties,” continued Erickson. “At SVHS, we may have as many as 30 students in a handful of electives and it’s common to have 50 or 60 students in music performance classes like choir, band and orchestra. But in our core classes, we will keep numbers around 20. If we need to, we will look to hire the first part of September, but I don’t anticipate that based on the current numbers.”
With SVHS enrollment weighing in at around 805, the district is preparing to accommodate any increase in enrollment by adding new course sections or hiring new personnel as needed. Teacher to student ratios across the district are expected to remain the same as in previous years.
