Behind the scenes of the Star Valley Independent

Aubrey Taylor (right) and Amanda Nelson (left) work together in this office on a weekly basis on the layout and design of the Star Valley Independent. The two are recipients of numerous awards from last week’s WPA Convention held in Casper. (SVI photo by Duke Dance, Although Aubrey and Amanda placed it and make it look good!)

Behind every successful business or organization are very important people who you typically don’t see, hear or read about on a regular basis. The real ‘rubber meets the road’ individuals whose efforts make
the day-to-day operations seamless and smooth.

At SVI Media, two of those people were recently recognized by their peers during the annual Wyoming Press Association (WPA) Convention.

Aubrey Taylor and Amanda Nelson are both graphic artists for the Star Valley Independent and SVI Media. Each of them won numerous awards for their work at the WPA Convention held in Casper last weekend. Those of us lucky enough to work with them already knew we work with two of the best in the business, long before the rest of the state noticed.

Aubrey has been with SVI for about five years. Her responsibilities include layout of the newspaper each week, ad design, graphics for SVI Sports broadcasts and occasional story writing.

Taylor, who’s college degree is in communications with an emphasis on advertising and sub-emphasis in public relations, credited her work to experience and training. “In college I did a lot of graphics and design work on the computer. But I also took art classes in high school from Kim Dockstader so I’ve always had the love for design and creating things.”

Taylor works closely with Amanda Nelson each week. Laying out the design of the newspaper, creating business ads for both print and online, as well as graphics for SVI Sports Broadcasts. Nelson has numerous other day-to- day responsibilities, most notably running the front desk, customer relations and billing. It’s also very common to see Amanda step up and fill whatever other role is necessary. Including running the board at the radio station during sports broadcasts (quite often with very little to no advance notice), running cameras during sports, helping backstage during Vocalist events and even making sure each staff member gets their favorite treat, usually homemade by Amanda, for their birthday.

“That’s one thing I really love about SVI, is I’m not doing the same thing all day every day and I get to do a lot of different stuff,” stated Nelson. “My parents taught me to be dependable and to make sure you’re there when you need to be and even when you weren’t supposed to be but something comes up. Make sure you’re there and dependable. I really appreciate them for instilling that in me.”

For more information on the well deserved awards and recognition given to Aubrey and Amanda during the WPA convention, see pages 10A and 11A of this week’s Star Valley Independent. Shout- out to SVI’s Dahl Erickson who was also recognized for his work by the WPA, which can be found on the same pages.

As you read the Star Valley Independent, or the next time you watch an SVI Sports broadcast, or see any sort of graphic on SVInews.com, know that it would not have happened without the award winning, behind the scenes efforts of Aubrey Taylor and Amanda Nelson.
