Carrie Betty Bagley Frome was born 26 September 1930 in Fairview, Wyoming to Carrie Heap and Sidney Rex Bagley. She was delivered at home with Dr. G. W. West in attendance. She spent her years until college on their ranch in Fairview. She described her childhood as very carefree. She and her siblings would spend time swimming in the irrigation canal and Crow Creek. They would ride horses and play house in the willows on their place. She loved to read even as a young girl and attributed that to reading together as a family. She went to the four-room grade school in Fairview until the eighth grade. When she was old enough, she would help on the ranch. This involved driving the stacker teams, plowing, harrowing, leveling, raking and buck raking. She described her hours of working with her family as very happy. She graduated from 8th grade as the valedictorian.
She attended high school in Afton at the Rock building. She liked school and kept busy with many activities. She was a Pep Star and assistant editor of the year book. Because she enjoyed school, she did really well. When she graduated, she was one of four top scholastic students in her class and received a four-year scholarship to the University of Wyoming. The summer before attending college, she got a job working at Star Valley Drug.
College was difficult for her as she had not learned to study as her classes came easy in high school. It was an adjustment, but she rose to the occasion and did well. She tried out a couple of different majors and by her second year of college was in home economics and English and really enjoyed them. After her second year of college, she was married to Ted Child Frome in the Salt Lake Temple. They both moved back to Laramie and both of them went to work. Ted’s National Guard unit was activated and he moved to Kentucky. Betty continued her studies in Laramie. After the fall quarter, she moved to Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Here she lived in a small trailer house without a bathroom. She worked at the PX as a bookkeeper and assistant manager.
After discharge from the army, they both moved back to Laramie. She graduated with a degree in Home Economics and English. She had 5 children. Teddy Louise, Kristeen deceased, John William, Pauline and Annie. She helped out financially by teaching school, secretary for Ted, and organizing the food and sending out letters for the pack trips and hunting camps. She followed her children with their various activities to cheer them on. She encouraged all of her children to attend college and get a good education. Education is freedom and choices. Her family was very important to her.
She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She held many positions including Young Women, Primary and Relief Society presidencies and a teacher for scouts, Young Women’s, Primary and Relief Society. She had a strong testimony of the Gospel. There are many people around her who have been blessed with her ministering, yummy meals and her wonderful breads.
Betty enjoyed traveling. She did many trips with Ted and with her friends and sisters. She traveled to visit friends and family.
She lived independently after Ted was killed in a car accident. She drove her own car and took care of her home until July 2018 when she fell and broke her neck. She then moved to St. George, Utah and lived until her death. She is survived by her four children, Teddy (Jerry Goulding), John Frome (Kim), Pauline Frome and Annie Frome, 14 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren.
In her autobiography she stated, “I was born of goodly parents and grandparents.” She also stated, “I have lived a good full life and will try to live every day until I die.”
There will be a graveside celebration of her life next summer when the roads are safer to travel on.
Rayola Park passed away February 13 peacefully in her home in Etna, Wyoming.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday February 19.
Viewings will be at Schwab Mortuary in Afton on Friday, February 18 from 6-8 p.m., and on Saturday in the Etna Ward building from 10 – 11:30 a.m.
