Thayne Town Councilman Joe Heward, who overlooks the Recreation Department, says Lincoln County gave it a small grant to allow rentals and hold special activities for cornhole games.
He says they bought ten cornhole games and this will also allow them to hold a tournament. The town will hold one on March 25th at 6 PM at the Rec Center.
“Our idea is we’re going to see how this works,” Heward said. “We’re going to have food there and our idea is to hopefully have other groups who want to sign up and host a cornhole tournament as a fundraiser.”
He says to register for this event you go to the town’s website and go to the recreation programs section on the site here. It is $35 and the town councilman says that includes a double elimination.
“The tournament is for 8-years-old and up,” Heward said. “We knew another team where the winner was an 8-year-old and his grandpa.”
There will be food provided for the teams and there will also be opportunities for those coming to watch to purchase food and drinks as well. The grand prize will be $200 for the winner and $100 gift certificates for the town of Thayne for second and third place.
He also says you will want to register quickly as there is a limited number of spots. This will also be available to the public to rent to hold your own tournaments as well. He says this first tournament is to help give an idea of what a tournament would look like.
“The Town of Thayne would turn around and let you use the cornhole boards,” Heward said. “With the idea that your prizes are going to be gift certificates to the Town of Thayne businesses.”
He says Rec Center gets a lot of support from the local businesses and so they are trying to give back to them. He says depending on rewards offered you could make between a $500-$900 profit for a 32 team tournament.
“We’d let you use the building, the fields and stuff, and these boards for free,” Heward said.
He also reminded the public that the community center offers an array of programs and options including pickleball. Every Wednesday night in March there will be a pickleball clinic at the Rec Center which will be offered to the public for free.
