◆ Lawmakers consider changes after property values skyrocket.

The House Revenue Committee is considering a number of bills this week that relate to property tax law in Wyoming. The Wyoming Legislature is hoping to make changes to how property is taxed in the state, after landowners saw a dramatic increase in property values, resulting in a jump in property tax bills.

“The appetite statewide is certainly there for something to change,” stated Rep. Andrew Byron (R-HD22) during a live interview Monday morning on SVI Radio. “This week we will be diving into the bills. It sounds like we’re probably going to look at over 20 different bills, a lot of them doing the same things, but we are going to look at about 20.”

Byron, whose district covers portions of northern Star Valley and southern Teton County, is a member of the House Revenue Committee. He said more specifics on the bills will be understood after the committee dives into them.

Heading into the session multiple solutions to property taxes were proposed, including a property tax refund program, limiting the maximum taxable value increase and providing certain property tax exemptions.
