Third honor for Fertig and fifth for Pedersen
For the second time this season, the Wyoming Cowgirls have swept the Mountain West Player of the Week awards. Allyson Fertig was named the league’s Player of the Week while Malene Pedersen earned Freshman of the Week honors. The duo swept the award together January 30 as well.
This marks the third time this season and second consecutive week that Fertig has received the honor. Fertig averaged 25 points, 7.5 rebounds and a block per game on 20-of-30 shooting from the floor in Wyoming’s wins over Nevada and Colorado State. Fertig opened the week with 23 points, nine boards and two assists on 11-of-14 shooting against the Wolf Pack. She then followed that up with a new career-high 27 points against CSU. Fertig added a block, an assist and a pair of steals in the win while shooting 9-for-16 from the floor and going 9-of-10 at the free-throw line.
Pedersen, meanwhile, is receiving the honor for the fifth time this season after being named by the league office December 12, Jan. 9 and 30, as well as February 13. Pedersen averaged 17 points, seven rebounds and two assists per game for the Cowgirls while shooting 11-for-20 from the floor. Pedersen also added a pair of 3-pointers and made 10 free throws on the week. Pedersen opened the week with 19 points and a career-high nine rebounds against Nevada. She closed the week with 15 points on just seven shots while adding an assist and five rebounds.
Fertig, Pedersen and the rest of the Cowgirls are off this week as they concluded the regular season Saturday against Colorado State. Wyoming is the No. 2 seed in next week’s Mountain West tournament in Las Vegas.
