McCoy Smith has been a starter for the Lyman Eagles since his freshmen year which in his own words “helped contribute to [hitting 1,000]” but says that when he was first getting into games as a youngster he never had one day hitting 1,000 career points on his mind. The first time he thought about it was when he father let him know he when he was 7 points away a little while ago which as he says got a little into his head for a bit as he felt like he couldn’t score for a while as it was on his mind but after sinking the free throw that got him to exactly 1,000 it was like a cloud was lifted and he felt like he could get back to playing his game again.

The Eagles have also had a very successful team season so far this year as well sitting at 15-6 overall and 5-1 in conference play with regionals right around the corner and currently riding a 6 game winning streak. “I like this team a lot I really like all of them” said Smith about his teammates and what they have meant to him this season, he then mentioned some of his favorite moments were facilitating the ball to Braydon Bradshaw for some of Bradshaw’s dunks and when asked if McCoy had any dunks in him he simply replied “no” followed by laughter.

So while we may not be in line to watch any two-handed slams by #2 this year at regionals we can expect some heated and tightly contested basketball with the Eagles leading scorer likely to be a massive part of all that. Perhaps even literally as McCoy and Dahl both agree Mountain View’s arena is one of the hottest venues to play in, and the rivalry between 2 stories basketball programs in Lyman and Mountain View will also certainly be a fun battle to watch at the Buffalo’s home court after Lyman took the regular season contest in Lyman 43-33 just last Thursday evening.

One of Smith’s other favorite memories of the season was a stretch early-season where the Eagles had 9 consecutive games played away from home and the memories made with his teammates during those road trips and the big bus rides. After the season Smith will be taking to the pitch to play soccer in the spring then serving a mission after school before deciding what he will be doing for college and if he will continue his playing career post-high school.
