WHP: Seatbelts and airbags in use in head-on collision

Traffic is once again flowing on Highway 89 in the Narrows after multiple accidents occurred at roughly the same time. The Lincoln County Dispatch Office told SVI News that three different accidents occurred in the area on Thursday morning, April 14. Both lanes of traffic were closed near the Bedford turnoff, just south of the Thayne Rest Area.

The accidents occurred at roughly 8:50 a.m. The road was blocked until about 9:30 a.m. when the southbound lane was able to reopen. The northbound lane opened a few minutes later.

Emergency responders form both Afton and Thayne responded to the accidents. Weather and traffic conditions caused problems for the emergency response, with dispatch reporting that a medical vehicle was stuck and was eventually escorted to the hospital by a fire truck.

According to Wyoming Highway Patrol, one accident took place on US 89 in the form of a single vehicle rollover near the Grover corner. Icy roads and slush were highlighted as contributing factors.

Just minutes later a two-vehicle collision took place whereas the northbound vehicle, a 2018 GMC Acadia, lost control on the ice and crossed the center line and collided with a southbound vehicle, a 2010 Ford Ford Fusion.

All occupants were transported for medical attention. The driver of the northbound vehicle was cited for speed too fast for conditions.

“The good news is everyone was wearing seatbelts and the airbags deployed properly,” stated Lieutenant Matt Brackin of WHP.  “This gave everyone the best chance for survival and and it’s what we hope to see when we arrive on a scene.”
