Tornado touches down on top of Gillette coal mine

At least eight people were injured Friday night, June 23 in Gillette when a tornado touched down at the North Antelope Rochelle Mine near Gillette. According to the Gillette News Record, all workers at the coal mine have been accounted for.

Tornado hit at roughly 6:00 p.m. during a shift change at the open-pit mine, flipping over multiple buses that were there to transport workers. The tornado also knocked over 12 empty train cars. According to Leslie Perkins, Campbell County public information officer, none of the injuries appear life-threating.  Six people were taken by ambulance to Gillette for treatment, one was taken by ambulance to Douglas and another refused treatment.

The North Antelope Rochelle Mine is located about 60 miles south of Gillette and about 20 miles south of Wright. Peabody officials are expected to release more information Saturday about the damage to the mine.
