***UPDATE AUGUST 11 *** –
Officials with the Bedford Water and Sewer District have issued a boil order after identifying E coli in the water.
“We have E coli in the water for it should not be used for food prep, drinking, dishwashing, teeth brushing or anything like that unless it has been disinfected, said Jason Mavy, Water Operator with the Bedford Water and Sewer organization.
“We normally test for bacteria on a monthly basis and this time we had a positive test,” he said. “After one positive test we do some follow-up testing and there’s no question that we have E. coli in the system.”
According to Mavy, they are currently investigating the cause and also starting to treat the water. They are also delivering notices door to door and sending out informative e-mails.
“We’ll let people know when the boil order is lifted,” he concluded.

E. coli is short for Escherichia coli, a bacteria that normally lives in the intestines of healthy people and animals. Some strains can cause severe stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea and vomiting.
