A California woman was reported to have fallen off the west side of Teewinot, part of the Teton Range inside the Grand Teton National Park in the early morning hours of Friday August 11.

According to information provided by the GTNP, park rangers responded before dawn where they found Joy Cho of Simi Valley, California. Cho had succumbed to injuries at the scene due to a fall and was pronounced dead.

Using a technique referred to as “short-hauling”, which refers to a technique where an individual or heat is suspended below a helicopter on a 150-2050 foot rope, Cho’s body was moved from the scene and turned over to the Teton County Coroner’s Office. This technique is used to allow rescuers for direct access to an injured person and is often used in the Teton Range where conditions make it difficult to land a helicopter.

Cho was with seven companions who were flown to the Jenny Lake Search and Rescue Cache at Lupine Meadows before being transported back to their vehicles at the trailhead.

“We at the GTNP extend our condolences to the Cho family and their friends,” the release stated.
