• Chili and Cornbread Cookoff is Dec. 2.

Turning Point is holding a fundraiser to continue to provide help to those dealing with a domestic violence situations.

The first is a Chili and Cornbread Cookoff which will be held December 2 at the Thayne Community Center gym from 5-8 p.m. There will also be a kids coloring contest that evening along with live music by Bob Stevens according to Turning Point’s Jennifer Woodie. There will be opportunities to win items as well.

“A Polaris four-wheeler raffle that has a plow on it,” Woodie said. “And we also have a raffle for gift baskets, gift cards, and more from our community.”

She says anyone is welcome to participate in the raffle for the ATV even if they can’t make it to the event, but you will have to come for the other prizes. You can enter the raffle by contacting her at 307-690-2538.

Lincoln County Sheriff Shane Johnson says he is very grateful for Turning Point and the support they provide. He says they have a lot of resources and they are very good at what they do.

“It’s a huge help to law  enforcement,” Johnson said. “But more importantly to the community and the people that maybe are in those situations or struggling from domestic violence and need some help.”

He says they can help you walk through the process on next steps. He says it can be over several matters such as protective orders in trying to keep you and perhaps your children safe. He says what they do is very specialized.

“Help them with the paperwork for something they need to file in court,” Johnson said. “They can help them with housing until the situation changes. There’s a lot of things there that they can do.”

He says many times when they’ve identified a situation or made an arrest, Turning Point comes in to begin helping the victim.

“It’s a huge deal,” Johnson said. “It’s a huge benefit and they do a great job at it.”

Woodie says as soon as an individual calls the 24 hour crisis line or gets brought in by the Sheriff’s department they are there “24/7” for the victim. She says they even help with getting things like groceries or rent.

“Getting them to counseling if they need help,” Woodie said. “It’s a self-help, so we just stand there and basically and walk them through all the processes and we’ll stand by their side.”

She says they do not necessarily “watch” children, but they will help where they can with your children as well, since it is a stressful situation. She also says these services are completely free.

She says they also will have another fundraiser in Kemmerer called Turning Point’s Hall of Trees which will be like a Festival of Trees event. This will be at Eagle’s Home and will go from 5:30 to 7:30 PM.
