The Star Valley girls basketball program will be in Fremont County this week as they begin their schedule.
The Lady Braves will open up their 2023-24 season in Riverton at the middle school where they will face Cheyenne Central on Thursday. Friday will have a road game in Lander for the morning followed up by an evening game versus Cheyenne East at 4 p.m. The Star Valley girls lost to the Thunderbirds in the opening round of the 4A State tournament last March, 46-28. The ladies picked up a 51-35 win over Lander.
Star Valley will then face Sheridan at 3 p.m. on Saturday before heading home. The Lady Broncs got the better of last year’s clash in a 44-27 final.
SVI Media will be streaming the varsity games against Cheyenne East on Friday and against Sheridan on Saturday.
“This year the vibe and the intensity and the positive energy is through all the programs,” stated head coach Kade Erickson. “[In] all the drills the girls are hustling and when we scrimmage they push each other. It’s been a lot of fun. They are getting along and I hope we can continue that.”
The Strannigan Tournament has become a staple of the early season slate for Star Valley.
“I love this tournament because it gives us a chance to gauge the eastern side of the state,” Erickson added. “They have the best competition and we are going to take any losses we might have to help us get better so we can make improvements at State if we see these teams again.”
Erickson emphasized that those adjustments were coming from the staff mentality.
“The girls are playing to win this weekend,” he said. “They are scrimmaging and working as to win the tournament so I love that.”
