Both the girls and boys basketball teams qualified for the Wyoming State tournament next weekend in Casper as they picked up semifinal wins at the 4A West Regionals in Green River on Friday.

The Lady Braves picked up a 41-31 win over the Rock Springs Tigers behind a stout defensive effort, some balanced scoring and contributions from many of the bench players. Sheridan Coles hit five if her six shots from two-point range and finished with a team-high 11 points and also chipped in six rebounds. Kambree Johnson carried the scoring load early coming off the bench and finished with team points. Emily Dana had seven points and eight rebounds while Kenlee Engelhardt and Makayla Christiansen each scored five.

It was a bit of a revenge game for a February 3, loss in Afton where the Tigers beat Star Valley 41-29. This time no Rock Springs player reached double figures as Ella Brewster finished with nine to go with eight rebounds.

The two teams combined for 48 free throws and the Tigers had four starters foul out of the game. Star Valley had two.

The win sends the Lady Braves to the championship game where they will face the reigning 4A champion Cody Fillies at 12 noon. The Fillies defeated Kelly Walsh 59-37.

The Braves were matched up with the Riverton Wolverines as the two teams have met up several times in the last handful of years in the post-season. Most of those games have been tight but this time Star Valley had a terrific shooting night and pulled away for a 62-44 final.

Both teams shot 21 three-point attempts but the Braves made a total of ten of them while the Wolverines netted three; all from Parker Paxton. Max Jensen and Cooper Lancaster each hit  a trio of them for the Braves while Dylan Shumway followed up a 22-point Thursday night with a pair of triples. Lancaster had a double-double as he had the game-high of 11 rebounds as well.

Jensen finished with 16 points, Lancaster had 13.  Simon Gaskell scored seven and blocked three shots.

Another big factor in the game was the bench play of Star Valley as they combined for 22 points, led by Smith McClure who had 11. Also scoring off the bench was Shumway, Dayton Schwab and Zane Hedges. The Braves also made 14 of 20 free throw attempts in the game compared to a 3 of 8 night for the Wolverines.

The win sets up a rivalry championship game between the Braves and the Jackson Broncs. That game is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

The Wolverines drop into the consolation bracket where they face off against Cody. Jackson defeated Rock Springs 61-51 to get to the championship game.

The Wyoming State Indoor Track and Field Championships started on Friday morning in Gillette. Results from Day 1 have not been posted. However, according to head coach, Ty Draney, Star Valley already crowned a trio of champions and scored points for the team race.

The meet resumes again on Saturday. Star Valley is competing in the 3A classification for the final time. In years past the event has been an All-Class meet, but split into 3A and 4A last season.
