UW Track and Field Excels in Colorado and California

• Star Valley’s Asefa Wetzel near the top in the 1,500 Meter Event

Wyoming track and field had representation at both the Jack Christiansen Invitational at Colorado State University and the Stanford Invitational at Stanford University on Saturday.

At the Stanford Invitational, Ryker Holtzen beat his own time at the top of the Cowboy’s record list in the 3000 steeplechase. Holtzen ran an 8:41.25 and finished seventh in the event.

Gabby Drube and Daniel Reynolds also moved up in the all-time Wyoming track and field records this weekend. Drube moved into third all-time for the Cowgirls as she ran a 58.39 to finish first in the women’s 400 hurdles. Reynolds placed first in the hammer throw with a mark of 217’ 2½” and moves into sixth all-time amongst Cowboys.

Paige Sefried and Tristan Knueppel both claimed first in the 800m runs. Sefried ran a 2:17.96 to finish in the top spot amongst the women. Knueppel won the men’s run with a time of 1:56.25.

Five Pokes finished with a top-four placing in jumping events. Remar Pitter won the men’s long jump after jumping 23’ 3”. Samuel Schneider jumped 6’ 5¾” to finish second in the men’s high jump. Joan Easter also claimed second with her jump of 19’ 0¼” in the women’s long jump. Kaliff Guevara placed third in the men’s triple jump with a mark of 46’ 3¾”. Kayla Stibley jumped 11’ 3¾” in the women’s pole vault to finish in fourth.

Cameron Burkett and Gage Griffith finished second and third respectively in men’s shot put. Griffith claimed third with his throw of 51’ 9½”. Burkett’s throw of 59’ 0½” was good for second in the event and seventh all-time for the Cowboys.

Kylie Simshauser won the women’s 5000 with a time of 17:10.37 followed by Leah Christians who placed second with her time of 17:38.91. Mady Willis finished fifth in the event with a time of 18:59.55 and Baylee Stafford claimed sixth with a time of 19:24.66.

Cowboys claimed the top four spots in the men’s 1500. McGinley Zastrow ran a 3:53.32 to win the event as Asefa Wetzel finished shortly behind to place second with a time of 3:54.28. Trevor Stephen took third with a time of 3:58.15 and Jacob Bach placed fourth after running a 3:59.72.

Jasmyne Cooper won the women’s 400 dash with a time of 58.10. Madelyn Blazo and Libby Berryhill-Worshek placed second and third in the women’s 1500 with times of 4:34.69 and 4:35.55 respectively.

Wyoming will be back in action next week in Boulder, CO, as they travel down to the University of Colorado Boulder to compete in the Colorado Invite.
