The Bridger-Teton National Forest is seeking public comments on the Cache Creek Trailhead Redesign Project to help shape the future of this busy and highly valued trailhead. Cache Creek Trailhead is a starting point for a multitude of activities including hiking, biking, dog walking, horseback riding, outfitted wagon rides, hunting, and in the winter, Nordic skiing, fat biking, and snowmobiling to access backcountry ski terrain. It is also home to a complex ecosystem and important perennial stream, for which the area is named. Due to its proximity to the town of Jackson and its appeal for many different types of recreation, the trailhead experiences a high volume of visitors, which the existing conditions do not effectively accommodate.

The site’s popularity has led Forest Service staff and the community to search for a trailhead design that offers a welcoming and sustainable connection between the town of Jackson and the National Forest, to preserve the area’s environment and valued visitor experiences for generations.

Through effective redesign, the Forest hopes to:

1. Improve the flow and organization of the existing trailhead and Hagen area to accommodate vehicles while reducing parking on the road.
2. Improve the condition and sustainability of the parking area, entrance road, infrastructure (e.g. signs, restroom), and trails to reduce impacts to water, vegetation, and soil while improving the quality of the experience and opportunities for visitors of all abilities.
3. Enhance the ability of forest staff and volunteer ambassadors to provide visitor education that promotes responsible and respectful use and help enforce existing regulations.
4. Enhance the connection between the community and the National Forest in a manner that builds awareness and appreciation of the area’s unique natural and cultural assets.

To address the purpose and need, forest staff worked with a local landscape architecture firm to create a conceptual plan for a new trailhead design. This conceptual plan has numerous elements, any of which can be removed or modified based on public or specialist input. After receiving public input during the scoping period and specialist analysis, Bridger-Teton National Forest staff will consider which elements to move forward with and which to modify or discard.

Comments on the proposal are welcomed and must be received by May 21, 2024. They may be submitted online through the project page, by mail, or directly to the Forest Service office, located on North Cache Street in Jackson.
