Listeners to SVI Radio’s Weekday Wake-Up morning show texted in their opinions to a name change to the Boys Scouts of America Organization.  On Tuesday, May 7 the BSA released a press release announcing they would change their name to Scouting American on February 8, 2025 to reflect “the organization’s ongoing commitment to welcome every youth and family in America to experience the benefits of Scouting.”

“This announcement also comes as the organization celebrates the fifth anniversary of welcoming girls into Cub Scouting and Scouts BSA programs. Scouting America currently serves more than 176,000 girls and young women across all programs, including over 6,000 who have earned the rank of Eagle Scout,” the press release continued.

Currently Star Valley has one local troop, according to the Boys Scouts of America Website. Troop 1307 Prater Peak is led by Karl Scherbel.

During the Weekday Wake-Up on Thursday, May 9, Duke & Dahl asked listeners to text in their opinions on the name change and the direction of the Boy Scouts of America in General. Here are their responses.

Oppose the name change

“Scouting America sounds like it’s spying on America.”

“Just causing more issues where there shouldn’t be by changing the scout. There needs to be separate boy scouts and girl scouts. Boys need that extra male reinforcement and examples to grow into men especially in a highly fatherless society. The girls need the reinforcement from another female, especially in a society that has so many single mothers who struggle for time for their kids while working full time.”

“Dumb. Never thought I would be ashamed to say I am an eagle scout.”

“I think it’s healthy for boys and girls to have some separated events. I’d be curious if they’ll have combined camp outs. Nothing good would have come from scout camp for me if there were girls there.  As an Eagle Scout it saddens me to say my kids won’t be participating.”

“From BS to only S describes the way that organization has devolved into garbage.”

“Boy scouts have gone downhill from the ‘good ole days’. Boys need to have their clubs; girls need to have their clubs”

“Why would they do that? The new name sucks.”

Okay with the name change

“Obviously it may seem different at first because it has always been “boy scouts” but skills can be important to everyone and obviously let’s not have coed tent sleeping.”

“It’s just a name change. They already involve boys and girls. So…”

“I’m fine with it but why are we losing the boy scouts  but the girl scout’s still get to be a thing?”

“Pretty much a non-issue.  The only constant in life is everything changes.”
