State Track and Field wraps up; Cokeville and Kemmerer girls claim team titles.

The Wyoming State High School Track and Field championships came to a close on Saturday afternoon in Casper as the 2024 spring sports season came to a close. 

It was a great showing for Lincoln County as the Cokeville girls won the 1A team title handily with a total of 147 points, 40 in front of second-place Southeast. Upton was third with 84. 

The Cokeville boys placed second with 87.2 team points behind only Burlington who won the 1A boys team title with 115.9. Upton again was third with 70 points. 

Addison Barnes won the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.62 and the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.73. Barnes then went out and set a new class record in the 300 hurdles with a winning time of 44.88. This was in addition to her state championship in the high jump of 5’ 2”

Mia Dayton won the 400 meter run with a time of 59.64. Dayton also won the 800 meter run with a time of 2:24.61. Bryli Groll won the 3200 meter race. 

Drake Plowman won the 800 meter run for Cokeville with a time of 1:59.88, the 1600 meter event with a time of 4:36.34 and the iron man triple crown with the 3200 meter run and a time of 10:15.14. 

The Kemmerer girls also brought home a state title to western Wyoming as they edged Big Piney by six points for the trophy. The Lady Rangers finished with 113 points and the Punchers had 107. Niobrara County was third with 62. The Kemmerer boys placed eighth with 33 points. All of the 2A class was chasing Big Horn who went wire to wire over the weekend and finished with 157 points. Lingle-Ft. Laramie was second with 106.5 and Burns was third with 80. 

Laynee Walker led the Lady Rangers with a trio of individual championships in the 100 meter hurdles (16.96), the 300 hurdles (47.45) and the pole vault (10’ 6”)

The quartet of Jolee Swasey, Walker, Natasha Martinez and Tyler Thatcher won the 4 x 100 relay. 

The squad of Martines, Elle Thatcher, Tyler Thatcher and Aralynne Erickson won the 4 x 400 meter relay. 

The Lady Rangers swept the relays as the 4 x 800 team of Erickson, Arianne Dearden, Laranda Waldner and Tyler Thatcher won with a time of 10:49.46.

In the 4A Class, the Lady Braves finished in a tie for fifth place with the Cody Fillies at 57 team points. Valerie Jirak earned four All-State honors a she won the high jump and placed second in the 400 meter, the 100 hurdles and the long jump. Kammi Merritt also had a great showing in Casper with a pair of All-State performances as she finished second in the 200 meter race and the 300 hurdles. Both of those events featured a new overall state record as the only time besting Merritt. 

Sheridan won the girls team title for the first time since 1983 with 112 points. Cheyenne East was second with 83 and Kelly Walsh was third with 79. 

The Braves finished eighth overall with 39 points powered by points from the distance runners of Jase Burton and Habtamu Wetzel. Burton earned All-State in the 3200 meter and Wetzel earned All-State in the 1600 meter. 

It was a double championship for Sheridan as the Broncs scored 141 points. Cody was second with 81.5 and Cheyenne Central was third with 64.
