Do you see it as a day to honor all our military? Is it a day that signals the start of summer? Does it mean a day off work? Or is it just a day to rest and relax? It may be all of that, but, as we observe Memorial Day, consider it is more than just another day.
Memorial Day was first declared on May 30, 1868, by General John Logan, as a day to honor and decorate the graves of those who have died in service during the Civil War. The day was initially named Decoration Day and officially became a federal holiday known as Memorial Day in 1971. A holiday to be recognized on the last Monday in May to pay respect to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in protecting our country and freedom.
As you start your summer on a day filled with gatherings and barbecues, take a moment to reflect on the ultimate sacrifice made by our military members and their Goldstar families. To further honor Memorial Day consider: taking part in ceremonial events; visiting War Memorials; visiting a gravesite of the fallen; setting a place for the Fallen at your table; praying and supporting Goldstar families; flying an American Flag; or wearing a poppy, a symbol of remembrance, a peaceful future, and support of the Armed Services. Another way is to watch memorial movies, such as ‘Taking Chance’, observing the dignified transfer home of Marine PFC Chance Phelps laid to rest in Dubois, Wyoming.
Beyond Memorial Day, may the bravery, sacrifice, and selflessness of the fallen be honored and respected in how we live our lives. May their courage inspire us to live with purpose and gratitude.
On Monday, May 27, there will be memorial graveside ceremonies hosted at multiple locations by the local veterans organizations. The VFW Post/Auxiliary 4797 and American Legion Post 49 will host Upper Valley ceremonies beginning at 8:30 am at the Smoot Cemetery and finishing at the Afton Veterans Memorial around noon. The American Legion Post/Auxiliary 46 will host Lower Valley ceremonies beginning at 8:00 am at the Alpine Cemetery (near Nordic Inn) and finishing at the Alpine Veterans Memorial around 11:30 am.
