Small forest fire burning southwest of Bondurant

The Bridger-Teton National Forest is fighting a new fire on the Big Piney Ranger District. The Horse Creek Fire was reported at 12:39 pm on Monday July 1, 2024 by Forest Service Fire crews who spotted smoke from the Fish Creek drainage. The fire is half-acre in size and is burning approximately 20-miles southwest of Bondurant, Wyoming near Blind Bull. Helitack firefighters are on scene and the cause is determined to be lightning.

The fire danger rating for the Forest is listed as Moderate. “Moderate fire danger doesn’t mean there is no fire danger,” said Forest Management Officer James Turner. “We can still see fires burn and spread quickly on windy days,” he said. The Horse Creek fire is located at 9500-feet elevation and burning in subalpine fir. “We are looking at using some of the natural barriers in this confine and contain strategy to suppress this fire”, Turner said “and our crews are using their expertise to reduce unnecessary risk to firefighters on a steep slope,” he said. Smoke may be visible this afternoon, but we are asking the public to not report it.
